Meet Marcie
Marcie Geffner is an accomplished journalist, writer, editor, and book critic with bylines in The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Entrepreneur, and numerous city newspapers. Her reporting has been honored with four awards: three from the National Association of Real Estate Editors and one from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers. Her stories have also been featured by major banks, real estate companies, and financial services corporations, including Discover, New York Life, PayPal, Zillow, Yahoo Finance, and Fulton Bank.
Marcie began her career as a technical writer and then corporate communications manager at Tekelec, a pioneer in computer networking and telecommunications test systems in Calabasas, California. She later worked in employee communications at California Federal Bank in Los Angeles and then held a pivotal role as senior editor of California Real Estate magazine, published by the California Association of Realtors, also in Los Angeles.
After several years of freelancing, Marcie was named managing editor of Inman News, a well-known, trusted and independent voice in the real estate industry. At Inman, Marcie supervised a team of staff reporters, wrote breaking news stories and editorials, and reported from major industry conferences. Two of her top Inman stories were cited in U.S. Congressional hearings on real estate industry matters, solidifying her influence and expertise in this area.
An accomplished speaker, Marcie has participated in and moderated lively discussion panels at Inman Connect, the National Association of Real Estate Editors' annual conference for real estate news reporters, and the Greater Los Angeles Writers Conference for fiction and nonfiction authors.
Also in publishing, Marcie has written features for Bookmarks magazine, contributed columns to WriterUnboxed.com, and penned book reviews for Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and the Washington Independent Review of Books. She has assisted multiple authors with development and copy editing of their novels and nonfiction books.
Marcie is a member of the National Book Critics Circle and the Women's Fiction Writers Association.
She earned her bachelor's degree in English at UCLA, where she graduated magna cum laude (with high honors) and became an invited member of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious academic honor society in the U.S. She earned her master's degree in business administration (MBA) at Pepperdine University and also holds a certificate in corporate communications from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. She studied fiction writing at the UCLA Writers' Program, where she completed the nine-month "Master Class in Fiction," among other advanced courses.
As a student, Marcie was privileged to participate in a nine-week work-study-travel program at the Meir Shfeyah Youth Village in northern Israel and a six-week travel-study program at Cambridge University's Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, England.
Originally from Los Angeles, Marcie lives in Ventura, California, a beach town between Malibu and Santa Barbara.
